12th to 16th century

Built on the fondations from as far back as the 12th century, but completly rebuilt in the 16th century, renovated in the 17th century then restaured in 1900, The Castle of Montespieu is a vast rectangle which shows the characteritics of a medieval fortress comprised of seven towers, three in the main part and four on the pavillons. The Lordship of Montespieu originally belonged to The Knights of Caudière, attested at the beginning of the XIIIth Century then, at the end of the next century passed onto Hue or Hugues' family.

16th to 17th century(1)

We know that later, around 1508, the original castle, incorrectly situated by the documents and distant from the actual castle by around one lieue, was in ruins. The actual castle was built around 1510 by Pierre III d'Huc and his sons made the domain bigger, then the Lordship passed on to the Padiès by marriage. After the wedding, came a court case which has the advantage of giving us a loyal description of the castle's state in 1554.

Later, the castle passed onto the Toulouse-Lautrec, baron of Montfa. In 1570, Montespieu was looted and burned by the king's army. The 23 January 1590, Lord of Lacrouzette Jean de Nadal's widow Marguerite de Sales with one of her daughters and a servant were murdered, a quarter of a lieue from the castle, by the tutor.

17th century to Nowadays

The 23 May 1600, Montespieu was bought by Abel de Sue. Later, an act dated 17 September 1664 stated the renovations to be done to the castle as well as a detailed description of the building: the ditches are indicated, with the dovecote and the entrance is noted on the east side. The Scorbiac, succeded the Suc, then, in 1680 Antoine de Juge, a noble of Fabrègues, acquired Montespieu by preimption. The revolution damaged Montespieu, the CRENEAUX were destroyed. Paul de Juge started restauring the castle at the end of 19th Century. This protestant family conserved it with the domain until 1964 when Henriette de Juge died. She was the last person of holding the family name.

The castle is classified as a historical monument since 1992. It now belongs to Madame Esther Burki.
